The Bracelet

For as long as she could remember, Clarissa Morgan wanted to be rich, a problem, as she was born into a poor middle-class, working family.

There was no money for a university education and no unknown, rich relatives to leave her an inheritance. About the only thing going for her was her looks. Clarissa was a rare, blond beauty, who turned both men's and women's heads when she entered a room.

Clarissa knew she would never accumulate enough of her own money through work, to become rich, for that, she needed to marry well and was determined to do so. It had to be marriage and while she hoped when her wedlock, when it one day came, would be a fairytale 'happily-ever-after' scenario, Clarissa Morgan knew that was probably not likely. If the worst came to the worst, there would be a divorce settlement to that would make her attractive to prospective, new husbands.

For reasons she could never quite fathom, rich, single, men found the ex-wives of other wealthy men attractive and happily married them but balked at taking on their former mistresses.

Clarissa laid a new, never-before-worn, black satin dress on the sumptuous, thick, goose-down comforter in the master bedroom. She wished she could try it on but there was no time, her mistress would soon be out of the shower, ready to be assisted with dressing and fixing her hair. Still, she had held the dress to her chest and examined herself in the full-length mirror.

Tomorrow, she thought, before I send it for cleaning, I'll put it on.

The dress had a V-neck, cut deeply to best display cleavage and flesh to just above the wearer's navel. The hem was short and ended high on the thighs. Clarissa was certain she'd look spectacular in it, as she and the mistress were almost identical in size.

One day! thought Clarissa, stroking a wrinkle from the smooth fabric. I will have a dress just like this.

There were times she doubted it would ever happen but she always took heart by remembering her mistress's story.
